Dear Friend, (2 min read)

Here's how I create magical moments for people.

Show honest appreciation and admiration for people.

What does this mean?

Well, I've been the receiver of this from a client. Here's what he's done and how it benefited him immensely (and how you can steal this and apply it to your life).

Since the first summer I started detailing his car, he did one small thing. And this small thing actually had me wait to raise my prices for him for over THREE YEARS. Everyone else was paying 2-3 times more. But because of his thoughtfulness... I didn't raise my prices.

Look, all I'm trying to say is this. He had a real and tangible return on his thoughtfulness. I was happy to have his small gesture, and it saved him thousands of dollars. So what was the small thing he did?

He puts out a water with electrolytes every time I come to detail. That small act of thoughtfulness started a cycle, where because he gave first, I want to reciprocate that level of thoughtfulness. (This is called the law of reciprocity. It's powerful.)

Here's another example from this week:

I was paying for parking at a local community college. I noticed a classmate and paid for his ticket (it was $2). It made his day. It's a small thing, but it made a difference. He even said, "Dude, thank you. I'll definitely pay this forward." Now I don't know what the "return" will or won't be. I did this because it's something that is easy for me to do, and valuable to him. I did it simply because that's the type of person I want to be.

Another example this week: I had a friend who texted me that he was going to be 10 minutes late for our coffee. So I ordered his non-caffeinated drink that he normally drinks. A small thing, but it meant I had noticed ahead of time that he usually doesn't do caffeine, and bought it for him.

I also had a quick phone call with a friend who is a part of the Arena. The Arena is a community where I'm building communication, leadership, and self-mastery skills. We had a great conversation for just 10 minutes.

I had another friend who I wanted to have dinner with. So even though it was last minute, I sent a text. And we had Dinner! It was a great evening with him his wife and his kids.

I often make these phone calls or send voice memos while I'm driving. It's a big part of how I maintain friendships with people that don't live in close proximity to me.

Here's how you do this in your life:

If you see something you honestly appreciate or admire about someone... share it this week. My challenge to you is to do this at least once per day.

Here's your frame to think through: What do I honestly admire or appreciate about this person?

Tell the person in person. Send a voice memo if you think a positive thing about someone you aren't around, or make a phone call. To be thought of can be a gift.

Ask to have dinner. Ask to go to coffee. Some people work last minute.

It's a small thing, but if you create a habit of doing this for 12 months, you'll be in a different world. Why? Instead of trying to get people interested in you, it's far easier to be interested in others.

Well, that's all for now. Share what you appreciate this week.
