Just Start: Metrics Matter

Why Measuring One Thing Beats Trying to Do Everything

Dear Andre, (2 min read)

The secret to achieving any dream isn't willpower—it's metrics. When I was 15, I discovered this by accident while tracking drum practice. That simple habit changed everything, and now I'm going to show you how to apply the same principle to transform your life in just 90 days.

The Drum Practice Discovery

At 15, I made a strange decision: I started tracking my drum practice hours. I wanted to be great, not mediocre, so I created the "3x3 rule"—three hours of practice before 3 PM, every single day. No exceptions. No practice meant no other activities until I hit my goal.

It worked. But more importantly, it taught me that dreams don't happen by accident—they happen through daily, measurable actions.

My 2024 Business Breakthrough

Early last year, I read "The 12 Week Year" and identified the three daily actions that would transform my detailing business:

  1. Post on social media

  2. Have 3-5 conversations per day

  3. Develop one offer

These weren't busy work—they were the precise actions that would move the needle. The results speak for themselves: I detailed 89 vehicles in the first 90 days of 2024. it worked because I worked. and I had a friend that we’d share our numbers with each other.

Sidenote: my first 4 week live "Just Start" cohort is almost filled (only one spot remaining) Normally $99 But the special launch price is just a $29 Admin fee. see the PS for more details.

The Power of Daily Reflection

Every night, I do "homework for life"—I identify my day's story-worthy moment. Usually, it involves connecting with people. Today's highlights:

  • Capturing an unexpected lens flare while detailing a car

  • Losing three pickleball games but still enjoying myself (a mindset win)

  • Nearly filling the first 4 week live cohort

  • It’s just a google doc. one column with date. one with what I wrote above. simple.

This practice keeps me focused on what truly matters: meaningful human connections. (it also helps me remember my life)

My Current Tracking System

Right now, I'm measuring two specific daily actions:

Daily Connection Goal

Send one 3-way text connecting two people from my worlds. This builds relationships while solving problems.

Daily Gratitude Goal

Send one appreciation message using the FBI framework: (often a voice memo or video) Most people crave honest sincere appreciation. When you have wonderful thoughts about someone do this:

  • Feeling: Express genuine gratitude

  • Behavior: Name their specific action

  • Impact: Describe how it affected you

Example: Instead of "Thanks for reading," try "I'm grateful you're reading this because it shows you care enough to invest time in words I've carefully crafted to help you build better relationships and live with more courage. The replies and texts remind me of the impact that these are having.

Your 90-Day Challenge

Here's the one thing that will change your trajectory:

  1. Choose ONE daily action that moves you toward your biggest dream.

  2. Track it religiously (yes/no, every single day)

  3. Review weekly and aim for 80% completion minimum

  4. Repeat for 90 days

The math is simple: 80% consistency over 90 days creates significant progress. Anything less probably won't.

The Bottom Line

You can't do everything, but you can do one thing extraordinarily well. For me, it's connecting people and expressing authentic appreciation.

What's your one thing?

The difference between dreamers and achievers isn't talent or luck—it's having a system that measures what matters most.

Metrics matter. Start tracking today.

P.S. There's still one spot left in my "Just Start" cohort beginning Monday August 4th at 6:30 PM PST. Four weeks to identify your dream, daily action, environment, and support network. Normally $99, but $29 (admin fee) for founding members. The question isn't whether you can afford it—it's whether you can afford not to finally turn your dreams into measurable progress.
